Featured in this lot is this Navajo Saddle Blanket hand woven rug circa 1940's. The rug features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wool construction that features a beautifully decorated with banded design and features a coloration of dark brown, light brown all set to an off white field. Navajo weavers have been producing numerous examples of Saddle Blankets from around 1880 to the present. These types of Blankets have also been used as Rugs for many years. Single Saddle Blankets are usually about thirty inches square. Double Saddle Blankets are meant to be folded in half, and are about thirty by sixty inches. A good portion of the Saddle Blankets were woven using a twill weave because it is stronger and thicker. Good Navajo Saddle Blankets used as a saddle blanket last in excess of 30 years. The condition of this Navajo Saddle Blanket is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this rug are 56 1/2" x 33 1/2". Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery.
