Montana Crow Porcupine Tail Quillwork Hairbrush
The lot features a rare piece, a porcupine tail hairbrush with quillwork and beaded case from the Crow Apsaalooke from the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana. The piece features porcupine tail section with porcupine quill hair cut at an angle and along the top sinew sewn are parfleche rawhide sections covered in porcupine quill quillwork with a natural dyed red, blue and cream / yellow in a geometric tab pattern. The piece is paired with a Hudson Bay wool trade blanket remnant bag with sinew sewn abalone mother of pearl round buttons and glass trade seed beaded outside edge in sky padre light blue also done in sinew sewn as well. Very few of these Crow Hairbrushes that are made in the traditional authentic fashion from the Reservation are ever offered for sale. This is likely from the late 20th Century and displays well. The brush measures 6.75”L by about 2.5”D by 1.75”W. The wool bag is 8.5”W by 8”L when the top flap is open.
