Modified U.S. Model 1873 Trapdoor Springfield Single Shot Rifle, #347725, .45-70 cal., barrel has been cut to 22'', blued finish, walnut stock, non-issue blade front sight and Model 1873 rifle rear sight. Stamped on right side lockplate ''U.S.SPRINGFIELD 1873'', and on top of breechblock ''U.S. MODEL 1873''. Boxed ''SWP 1887'' cartouche on left side of wrist, and faint ''P'' firing proof on underside of stock. 1887 production. Rifle has been modified by cutting back forend and filling channel. A saddle ring has been added to the left side of the stock. Breech screw is a non-standard replacement. Metal surfaces are in fair condition with the lock showing a refinish over old pitting. The remaining metal surfaces are light gray overall with general patches of darkened pitting. Stock is very good as sanded and refinished showing general light scratches and some surface dents. Front edge of the triggerguard with a few small spots of wood filler type repair. Upper tang, lockplate, and parts of the triggerguard with a small reveal. Action is crisp, bore is fair with considerable old pitting. Est.: $250-$350. (Antique)
