This lot features an early Model 1879 Springfield .45-70 caliber cavalry saddle ring carbine, serial number 144467. This is a fine early carbine made in 1880 with all the correct features including sling ring bar, trap in butt plate for cleaning rods, “C” marked carbine rear sight, etc. A true original U.S. issued carbine made for the Indian Wars. Uncleaned, naturally aged metal has a smooth dark aged blue patina and shows no evidence of any restoration, cleaning or abuse. This as issued carbine has the correct “U.S. MODEL 1873” marked breech block, clear “U.S. Springfield” marked lock plate with eagle motif, correct carbine stock, all correct barrel “VP” over “eagle head” proof marks on the original 22 inch barrel. Excellent mechanics and bright near mint rifled bore, overall a very fine Indian Wars cavalry Trapdoor carbine. This is the standard model that was used in every major engagement from the Battle of the Rosebud and Battle of the Little Bighorn to Wounded Knee. A fine uncleaned attic-condition attractive example with solid wood and correct features. The carbine qualifies as an Antique Long Gun, and does NOT require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
