This is an example of a Schnider 1808 Contract Flintlock pistol with Massachusetts "M.S." acceptance mark stamped on the left stock flat. The pistol has a brass, pin-fastened, smoothbore barrel with flared muzzle. The top of the barrel is stamped "LONDON" surrounded by engraved borders and the breech has a stamped floral border with the "T" trademark on tang of Jacob Trout. Under the tang is "GC" standing for Godleib Clayton. Two "Crown/P" proof marks in incised, sunken cartouches are stamped on the left barrel flat. The lock plate has beveled edges, engraved borders and integral, fenced, iron pan. The gooseneck hammer is flat with beveled edges. The frizzen spring has a feather shaped tip. The ramrod pipe, side plate, trigger guard, buttcap and oval thumb plate are brass. The stock is black walnut and the pistol has a wooden ramrod with flared tip. The pistol is complete with a consigner letter that states it was constructed in 1808 by Phillip Schnider under contract with Massachusetts. Schnider's trademark (which is an impressed "FS" for Frederick Schnider) is stamped on the inside of the lock plate. Other marks on the pistol include James Moore's "M" mark on left side of stock as well as "V" (for viewed). (James Moore was the Proofer of Arms for the state of Massachusetts from 1807-1809). He also proofed the barrel.
