Mid-19th Century American J.P. Moore Half Stock Percussion Rifle
The light engraved lock is marked "J. P. MOORE / NEW YORK / WARRANTED". The large bore .54 caliber rifled barrel has blade front and notch rear sights and a blank brass inlaid initial plate behind the rear sight. Brass furniture, single set trigger, and wooden ramrod. Tiger striped maple half stock with a horn forend cap, silver overlays, a crescent iron buttplate, and a brass patch box.
BBL: 28 3/4 inch octagon
Stock: maple
Gauge: 54 percussion
Finish: brown
Grips:
Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Very good. The barrel has a mottled brown patina with a smooth dark patina on the remaining iron surfaces. The brass has an attractive "mustard yellow" appearance. A hole on the top barrel flat at the breech is plugged, with the upper tang missing a filler screw. The stock is very good with a few pieces of maple missing from the forearm with a minor crack on the right side, along with some minor dings and scratches. The trigger is missing the adjusting screw, otherwise action is fine. The overall form, combination of iron, brass and silver mounting and large .54 rifled caliber of this rifle all add up to the desirability of this fine piece of Americana.
