This is a McClellan Cavalry circa 1860-1886 US saddle with original rare type “S” curve US Cavalry Bit headstall/reigns, and B. Bros 1918 rifle scabbard. The saddle and bit were recovered at the Fort Ellis Bozeman, Montana area and have been in the collector’s family for over 80 years. The sellers father was plowing a field near the Fort Ellis site and ran across a wooden box with the saddle and bit wrapped inside. The McClellan saddle was a riding saddle designed by George B. McClellan. McClellan saddles were adopted by the Army in 1858 and were derived, with modification, from the Grimsley saddle. Fort Ellis was active from 1867-1886 and the 2nd Cavalry was station there. This is a 11 1/2 inch seat. The bit is marked "US" on one side and the scabbard is marked "B.B ROS 1918 P.T." The saddle is in good condition for its age, but is missing some pieces. The bridle, stirrups, and scabbard are all in good condition for their age, with signs of age and use. The scabbard measures 33" L x 7" W.
