McCabe Buckle presented by Roy Rogers
Stunning 2 3/4” x 3 3/4” heavy gauge, sterling silver and gold trophy buckle with raised gold longhorn and four flowers inset with rubies and a twisted gold rope edge. The gold banner across the top engraved TO MEL FROM ROY and the lower banner MEL WILLIAMS. This impressive buckle is unmarked but was undoubtedly made by McCabe Silversmiths of Hollywood. It is a perfect match with the buckle that was presented to Roy Rogers at the 1944 Madison Square World Championship Rodeo in 1944. The lot includes a circa 1945 photo graph of Roy Rogers, Mel Williams along with Chuck Ryan, the latter two wearing their identical longhorn buckles. Roy’s buckle sold in the 2010 High Noon auction for $23,000. Attached to a floral carved 40” belt that measures 36” from the buckle tongue to the center hole. Superb condition

PROVENANCE: Mel Williams was both a business partner and dear friend of Roy and Dale. They frequently went duck hunting together and Roy joined Mel when he hosted thousands of local residents and crippled children at his annual Marysville, Calif Christmas party and parade appearing on stage for a special musical performance with Gabby Hayes and the Sons of the Pioneers along with many other western stars. In 1948, Roy and Mel purchased a 314-acre ranch, which they named the H & T Ranch after Trigger and the Trigger colt, Harvest, owned by Williams. Mel and Roy were also partners in two other California ranches in Sutter county.
