This is a massive full stock Wheelock rifle that was assembled/made during the late 19th Century. The 37 3/4 inch barrel gauges at about 80 caliber and is equipped with a dove tailed brass blade front sight and a fixed iron and folding leaf rear sight. Large iron trigger guard and brass buttplate, wheel key is absent, double set triggers and mounted with a massive full hardwood stock with bone simple line inlays on the sides and bottom. The front of the comb has a 1 7/8 inch cut-out which is partially filled with a piece of ebony with a bone inset with the letter "S". There are also two pearl insets and there is a bone inset resembling a die directly ahead of the buttplate tang. There is a bone and contrasting sun burst on each upper side. The rear of lock plate is internally anchored with a hook.
BBL: 37 3/4 inch octagon
Stock: hardwood
Gauge: 80
Finish: bright
Grips:
Serial Number: nsn
Condition: Fair. The metal surfaces have a mottled brownish gray patina with scattered minor pitting, heaviest on the lock. The stock has been broken and repaired at the wrist and ahead of the lock, and was repaired, probably soon after the gun was made, and shows scattered minor dents and dings. There appears to have been a ramrod channel at one time that has been filled and horn overlays inserted at each end. The set trigger does not function. All of the bone and pearl insets remain good. A nice Wheelock decorative piece.
