Massive 14 pound Spencer heavy barrel sporting rifle, .50 cal., 34-1/2” half round/half octagon barrel, wood stocks, wood ramrod, #37605 and “T” stamped on left barrel flat at breech and on the left side of thebutt stock; formerly in the Jonathan Tibbet collection that was donated by Tibbet to the Claremont College Museum in 1928. This gun is in overall very good condition showing a heavy dark brown patina on the barrel withplum brown patina on the receiver and lockplate; strong rifling in the bore, crisp action, good markings, classic weathered butt stock with pewter fore end on the fore stock; also a museum tag #5623 on the buttplate. Tibbet was born in 1856 on his father’s ranch near San Gabriel, California; he served as a Scout and Chief of Scouts for the U.S. Army, principally in the Southwest; he later was a stockman and merchant andmoved to Riverside, California in 1891 where he invested in real estate and mining interests. Tibbet spent much of his later life helping the causes of Indians of the Southwest; he died in 1930 at the age of 77
