This is an example of 2,000 British type Green carbines produced by Massachusetts Arms Co. circa 1855 to 1857. These carbines were made under contract to the British government for use in the Crimean War. The upper tang is marked "GREENE'S PATENT/JUNE 27. 1854" and the primer door is marked "MAYNARD'S PATENT/SEP. 22. 1845". The lock plate is marked with the large crown over the cypher of Queen Victoria VR along with "MASS. ARMS. CO/CHICOPEE FALLS/U.S.A. 1856". British proofs are stamped on some of the components. The correct 18 inch blue barrel has a 16 sided hand grasping section in the center and a folding ladder rear sight with graduations marked 2-6. The straight grip stock has a patch box and crescent buttplate.

Condition: Very good plus. The barrel retains traces of the original blue finish ahead of the grasping section, otherwise a mottled brown patina which is darker towards the muzzle. The action and upper tang retain 40% original case colors. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth brown patina. There is extensive pin point pitting on the barrel, buttplate, and patch box with some deep pitting on the trigger guard. Mechanically fine.
