Marlin model 1881 lever-action rifle, .40 caliber, 28” octagon barrel, full magazine, steel shotgun style buttplate, serial #3976. This rifle belonged to Ishi, the last wild Indian to surrender to civilization in North America and was given to famous scout guide and frontiersman L. S. “Yellowstone” Kelley by Merle Aperson on 6/6/1909 with hand written postcard signed by Aperson, and the Marlin described and serial numbered, with cancelation mark on stamp. A large research folio with picture of Aperson is included. The postcard shows Deer Creek Falls near Nevada City, CA, where the Marlin was taken back from Ishi and his tribe before they were all killed, save Ishi. Ishi’s story is memorialized in a book entitled Ishi In Two Worlds by Krover, which is included, and an HBO film entitled Lost and Found also told this story. To summarize, Ishi was the lone survivor of the doomed Yahi Indian tribe. Ishi was discovered near Oroville, August 29th, 1911. The rifle shows a grey patina finish, some scattered erosion, honest wear and use. The trigger has been broken on the tip and filed down, the markings are good, the action is good, the bore is very good. Est: $5,000 - $10,000
