Marlin model 1881 lever-action rifle, 28” octagon barrel, full magazine, standard butt, .45-70 government caliber, serial #5020. The barrel retains 80-90% original blue thinning on the edges with some slight scratches,some marks around the top in the area of the barrel address, but generally sharp overall with crisp markings. The magazine tube shows 60-70% thinning blue, the left side of the frame shows 60-80% thinning original blue,the right side of the frame shows 30-40% original blue finish. The forend is in good condition with a nice light color. The buttstock is fair and would have been good other than two large cracks at the rightwrist and some other small cracks, dings, etc. The lever and hammer show considerable blue. There is a buckhorn rear sight in the rear dovetail and a blade front sight in the front dovetail which are of the period. Theedges are sharp, markings crisp, bore near excellent. A very nice 81 Marlin other than the compression cracks on the right side of wrist which could be restored by a good gunsmith. Est: $1,500 - $3,000
