Marlin Model 1881 Special Order rifle, .45-70 cal., 30” heavy octagon barrel, double set triggers, #5180. This rifle comes with a signed letter of provenance stating the rifle belonged to Dr. DeCock who was an MD whotreated an Indian Chief in the Southern California high desert area and was given the rifle 50 years ago or more for his services. The rifle shows a small brass plaque attached to the front of the fore end with an Indian Sun symbol-type design. The metal surfaces show a grey/brown patina with slight traces of blue mixed in, some scattered light to moderate erosion, pin prick pitting; the barrel address is good, edges fairlysharp; the stock is fair to good with split and repair to fore-end, two large cracks in the butt stock and large loss of wood along top edge on left side of fore end. The action is good, the bore is fair to good and clean, the barrel measures 7/8” across the center; the front sight is a period rocky mountain blade type in the original post, set in the correct dovetail with a period or factory rear sight, also in its correct position.
