Marathon Man Dr. Szell (Laurence Olivier) Is it safe? Dentist Drill
A grand iconic movie prop, this is one of Laurence Olivier's portable “Is It Safe?” (voted one of the top twenty all time classic movie lines!) dental drills from "Marathon Man (1976)". It is used by Dr. Szell (Laurence Olivier) a Nazi war criminal, forced out of hidden exile to retrieve his "nest egg" of diamonds collected from the gold he pulled from the teeth of thousands of concentration camp victims. He believes a young grad student, (Dustin Hoffman) knows the answer if it’s safe for him to get the diamonds without being caught. This is one of the special Dremel drills that Dr. Szell uses on Hoffman to try and get the answer, creating one of the most horrific and famous scenes in cinema. The film's Director of Photography, Conrad Hall, wanted the drill’s cord to show up in the dark room, so he had the prop department replace the drill's black cord with a non-working white one. Guy Bushman, the assistant prop master on the film, then replaced the white cord with the original working black one once the scene was completed. This screen used Dremel was supplied by Mr. Bushman, who also includes his own personal production notebook with original dividers, including his own hand-written notes, the shooting schedule, and a copy of the official production original screenplay. The drill is custom mounted on a special plexiglass display which includes three custom Plexiglass frames showing a screen shot of Olivier administering the drill to Hoffman, a lobby card from the movie, and an engraved display sign reading: "LAURENCE OLIVIER FILM USED DENTIST DREMEL" "It also comes with a Letter of Provenance from Guy Bushman. (Drill approx 9" in length, display 9.5"x19").
