Magnificient Condition Exceptional Winchester Third Model 1873 Musket

Estimate: $8500 - 11000
Winchester Third Model 1873 Musket manufactured in 1903. The musket has the distinctive 30 inch barrel with full-length forearm and three barrel bands, block front sight base that serves as a lug for a socket bayonet, military style folding leaf rear sight and carbine buttplate. The middle barrel band and stock are fitted with sling swivels. The frame has an integral dust cover rail and a dust cover with serrated edges. The buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor. The butt trap contains a jointed steel cleaning rod. The barrel, magazine, barrel bands and frame have a commercial blue finish. The hammer, loading lever and buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The forearm and stock are straight grain black walnut with a varnish finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. The caliber "44 W.C.F", is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the frame. "44 Cal." is roll-stamped in script letters on the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator. "{ MODEl 1873}" is roll-stamped on the upper tang in fancy letters with foliate devices at either end. The serial number, "570059B" is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and the upper tang screw.
BBL: 30 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 44 WCF
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 570059B
Condition: Excellent plus. The musket retains 98% plus of the bright original blue finish and appears to be in un-issued, un-fired condition. The very limited wear on the musket consists of a small spot of pitting on the top of the frame at the front edge of the ejection port and a tiny spot of pitting on the lower right edge of the frame, a small scuff mark on the right side plate and adjacent portion of the frame and a small amount of flaking on the top of the frame between the end of the dust cover rail and the hammer slot. All of this very minor wear appears to be the result of extended storage. The remainder of the blue finish shows no evidence of handling wear. The loading gate has 99% of the fiery niter blue finish and the niter blue bolt shows only very limited cycling wear. Virtually all of the vivid case colors are present on the hammer, trigger, lever and buttplate. The stock and forearm are in near new condition with all of the original finish and almost no handling or storage wear. This is an exceptional example of a Winchester Third Model 1873 Musket in nearly new condition.
