On the bottom of the pitcher is incised "Chicago 1893" in the unglazed stoneware base. On left side of pitcher is incised in Cobalt written script letters surrounding an elaborate design the following: "Slaves Cannot Drink From Me". If over their lips receive my wine that moment they are free! The drink Gods bounty and their shackles fall!" The aforementioned writing surrounds an elaborate design which includes two fire breathing dragons facing one another in opposition beneath thirteen war shields with vertical spears above an elaborate four inch wide coiled dragon tails below downward facing wings which radiate from an animal head/crossed swords. On opposite side of pitcher is: 1) BJARNYULFORN 893, 2) Lief Erickson 1000, 3) Thorwald 1001, 4) Shorstan 1002, 5) thorfin Karlsefne 1004, 6) Henry St. Clair 1380. All of the above surround a two by two inch Cobalt incised Viking ship afloat with Vikings aboard surrounded by a lace type border which has the sun rising at the top with rays radiating from it.Skald to the Vikings in Cobalt incised letters vertically beneath spout. 11 1/ inches tall 8 1/2 inches wide 6 1/2 inch base.
