This is a beautiful example of an engraved and gold inlaid Mangeot percussion pistol with an elaborately carved ebony stock. The barrel is blue and the remaining surfaces casehardened. The forward 5 inches of the barrel are round, it then tapers to 3 upper flats and then 5 upper flats at the breech. The top of the barrel is flat with flutes which extend 7 inches back and flutes on each side. The barrel is beautifully engraved with floral scrolls and vine work at four individual points. The muzzle displays intricate scroll work and floral splashes which surround the front sight. Just behind the muzzle and at two additional points are scrolls complimented by floral splashes which also flank the barrel marking "ACIER FONDU". The top of the barrel at the breech has a gold inset Regal crown insignia indicating that this set was a presentation piece to the highest of nobility or royalty. Also inlaid just behind the gold crown is a small gold rectangle marked by the maker "MANGEOT". The entire breach end of the barrel is complimentary engraved with the tight scroll and floral pattern. The engraving pattern extends to the breech plug, the hammer, lock, trigger guard, lower tang and buttcap. The ebony half stock is masterfully hand carved with relief floral and intersecting vine carvings which cover the entire stock. The stock is skillfully secured by a single wedge that is likewise engraved. The escutcheons and screw head are engraved with a floral design. Dove tailed small blade front sight and a notch rear sight which is adjustable for elevation by use of a key. The pistol is complimented by an ebony case hand made in the same quality of the pistol. Floral engraved brass corners on the lid, with hand set brass and silver wire bordering and elaborate floral inlays consisting of; mother of pearl, silver, gold and tortoise shell. The area around the lock is decorated in the same motif and with the same materials. The French fitted interior is lined with red fitted velvet. There is a leather label affixed to the inside of the lid which is gold embossed "H. MANGEOT / ARQUEBUSTER / DE LA COUR A BRUXELLES / ET DES. M. LRROI DES PAYS-BAS / A BRUXELLES". The case contains the following accessories: (1) Carved ebony and brass cleaning rod with a carved ivory handle. (2) Carved ebony handled nipple wrench with a carved ivory handle with a compartment in the handle containing an extra percussion nipple. (3) Ebony percussion cap container with screw-on ivory lid. (4) Silver plated brass oiler (5) German silver plated rod. (6) Key for the rear sight. (7) Outstanding floral scroll engraved single cavity bullet mold with spruce cutter. The engraving on the bullet mold covers both sides of the handles, the hinge screw, and every all five flat surfaces on the mold. (8) Silver priming flask. (9) Lastly included is a very rare combination powder priming charger/pick. An accoutrement which the writer has never encountered.

Condition: Excellent. The barrel retains 95% plus bright original high polish blue finish with some scattered light surface blemishes. The inside protected area of the hammer shows vivid case colors while the remaining casehardened surfaces have an attractive dove gray patina. The markings and engraving all remain crisp and clear and sharp. The stock is excellent plus, with sharp edges. The action is crisp. The case is very fine with some minor stress cracks on the elaborate veneer of the exterior, clear engraving on the brass corners and all of the inlays intact. The lining shows a few small areas of moderate contact wear and areas have faded slightly. All of the accessories are excellent. A pistol, case and accessories of this quality are an art form. They are in their own right a masterpiece built by master craftsman. It is a privilege and honor to offer this cased pistol.
