Manufactured circa 1881-1913, this earlier production revolver features floral scroll and punch dot engraving on the rear sides of the barrel and a zigzag line and dot design on the sides of the muzzle end. The top strap has a zigzag line and dot design on the top and scroll on the sides. The sides of the barrel lug have a zig zag, dot and diamond design and there is a floral style design around the barrel hinge screw. The sides of the frame are decorated with floral scroll and punch dot engraving. The back strap has a zigzag line and dot design at the top and on the heel with the Inscription "JIP" in the center. The top of the barrel rib is marked with the line address/patent dates, and the matching serial number is marked on the butt, rear cylinder face, barrel latch and barrel. The revolver is nickel plated with gold hammer and cylinder, blue barrel latch and casehardened trigger. Fitted with smooth pearl grips.

Condition: Very fine. The revolver retains 95% plus original nickel finish with some minor flaking on the frame, otherwise finish loss is isolated on the grip straps and trigger guard. The trigger retains most of the bright original case colors. The hammer and cylinder retain 95% original gold finish with edge wear and a drag line on the cylinder, and some minor flaking on the hammer. The grips are excellent with an attractive aged hairline crack at the screw escutcheon. The markings and engraving remain crisp. The action is excellent. A beautiful exhibition quality engraved Smith & Wesson. It is not often large frame Smith & Wesson revolvers are encountered in this condition.
