This is an excellent example of a scarce Stevens Model 54 Schuetzen Special single shot rifle in 22 short. These models were manufactured from 1897 to 1916, and this model is very similar to the No. 51 and No. 52 except they were equipped with the full loop lever, better quality/fancier engraving on the receiver, fancy checkering on the forend and stock. The forend is equipped with a door-knob type palm rest and the stock has a small style cheekpiece and double prong Schuetzen buttplate. This rifle is equipped with a medium weight, full octagon barrel, that is marked on the left side with the standard two line: "J. Steven A&T CO./CHICOPEE FALLS MASS. PAT. OCT 29. 89" address/patent date, with the caliber markings of "22-SHORT" on the right rear side. It has a fixed globe target type front with no provisions for a rear sight, with a tang mounted, mid-range vernier target, peep rear sight. This rifle has also been fitted with a Stevens 4X telescopic sight with the front base having multiple mounting positions for the front rings. This rifle has a straight grip, pot belly style, fancy walnut stock and forend with the double set trigger with the fully finger loop lever. The number "54" is stamped on the underside of the barrel, inside the forend and on the front face of the receiver, with the rifle serial number marked only on the underside lower tang. The elaborately engraved receiver features a very detailed floral scroll motif with a standing bear in an oval panel on the left side with a similar quality highly detailed standing deer in the same style oval panel on the right side.

The Stevens rifle scope retains 90% of its blued finish overall. The stock and forend both retain 95% of their hand rubbed factory finish, both showing light handling marks, and scratches overall. The checkering on both the stock and forend are excellent with nice sharp checkering with minor handling marks and light pressure dents in some areas from actual use and shooting.
