Mabel Yorba’s Personal Bohlin Saddle
Elegant and important sterling and gold mounted 1920s parade saddle, custom-made for Mabel Yorba by Edward H Bohlin of Hollywood. The stunning floral carved, high back saddle is mounted with filigreed 3-color gold bucking-horse scenes on the skirts and a rearing horse on the tapaderos. The horn cap has Mabel Yorba’s initials in gold. The saddle has the earliest Bohlin maker’s cartouche on the seat. However, Mabel decided early on, as evidenced by the 1930 photograph of her atop her Palamino, that she preferred long Visalia tapaderos to her Bohlin stirrups. The bridle with a marked Edward H Bohlin bit, has silver ferrules, an intricately engraved browband with a floral silver concho drop that is adorned with a rose gold letter Y. The martingale features the same silver and Yorba concho. The highlight of this saddle must be the back of the high cantle, which depicts in silver and 3-color gold a independent cowgirl roping a bucking horse while her male counterpart misses and lassos a cactus. The fenders of the saddle feature a let’er buck cowboy dressed in woolies atop a bucking horse
