MASS. ARMS CO. - MAYNARD MODEL 1882 SINGLE SHOT

RIFLE. Cal. 22 LR. S# 23689. Bbl. 26" round with short octagon section at breech end. Front sight is Beach Combination; rear sight has narrow dovetail with slot blank. Top tang has Marbles MSA marked target sight. Rear of barrel with drilled and tapped holes for target block presently fitted with adapter base holding Redfield alloy 3/4" rings for 22 grooved receiver mounting containing desirable Redfield 4X scope having crosshair reticle; forward portion of barrel drilled and tapped for scope bock at more defined 14.4" spacing. Mfg. of all models from 1860's to 1890 and offered with infinite number of configurations / options. Ornate buttstock has pistol grip, superb burl figure, side panels with fleur de lis endings, fine checkering with decorative borders, wavy end of grip, straight comb and widows peak checkered hard rubber buttplate having early Remington Arms Co. logo as used on Model 1894 shotgun. Top of barrel forward of octagon section marked "REBORED & RIFL'D BY J. STEVENS A&T.CO. CHIOPEE FALLS, MASS." with faint parting line just forward of octagon section. Bottom of barrel has dovetail holding swivel base having set screw. Operating lever is of typical Stevens style rather than early Model 1873 closed loop configuration. Barrel assembly has vintage commercial style finish whereas action and lever are highly polished with attention to edges and contours. Barrel has plain, slim uncheckered forend added that while well fitted is likely not original to the period as examples of forends are checkered and used in conjunction with barrels having elongated octagon sections; bottom of barrel has 2 separate mounting points under forend. CONDITION: very good appearance as refinished yet buttstock appears original finish to time of installation. Good forend with light handling marks; buttstock very good with superb figure and minimal handling marks. High polish of action has some very light scratches and deep mirror finish. Light barrel marks by front scope block location due to plug screws and prior installation. Light thinning on edges of scope rings; near excellent scope finish and optics. Very good bore with slight wear and hint of frosting. PROVENANCE: Estate of Frank Glenn Marsh. (01-21296/NW). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
