M1858 USMC Shako
Dating from the Civl War this rare United States Marine Corps shako exhibits a gilt plaited, brass die stamped insignia of the Union shield with the letter “M” mounted within a stamped brass infantry horn. The shield is surrounded by a brass half-wreath. The body of this shako is composed of a heavy weight pressed blue wool felt. The body is fitted with a 5.5" diameter molded leather crown and a 1.3/4" patent leather band at the base. The chinstrap and Eagle/Anchor USMC buttons are present. The leather visor is edge bound and has a patent leather coating. Present at top front of the crown is the red ball shaped pom-pom. There is loss to the wool at the rear of the shako, and only remnants of the New York makers label remain. Overall very good condition for its age. Very rare, not a lot out there.
