M. Peinlich Indian Chief Bronze Bookends 1900-1919
This is an excellent set of Indian Chief solid bronze bookend sculptures by Max Peinlich and cast by Griffoul of Newark, NJ circa 1900-1919. The set shows a very heavy solid bronze with beautiful patina’d finish showing a regal Native American Indian Warrior Chief wearing a pluming headdress bearing. Each is signed in the bronze “M. PEINLICH Scp.” Each of these heavy pieces is stamped on the back “CAST BY GRIFFOUL NEWARK N.J.” and one in addition marked “REAL BRONZE”. Max Peinlich was an Austrian sculptor who received his training in the Imperial Museum of Arts and Crafts in Vienna and in the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, France. After moving to America, Peinlich first received recognition for a display case he designed at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. These appear to be an original work of art made during the artist life having a fantastic classic Art Nouveau Art Deco design and incredible heavy and fine craftsmanship. One of if not the best example of the Indian Chief bookends by Max Peinlich an cast by Griffoul ever offered for sale. Each measures 6.5”H by 5 5/8”W by 2.75”D. Total weight of approximately 16.70 pounds (16.70 lbs.)
