In this lot you have a very fine piece of Civil War Era Militaria, in the form of a Elisha Waters - Troy, New York saddle tree, stamped with the name of Union Lieutenant Colonel P. V. Hagner. Elisha Waters - Simply known as E. Waters was an amazing business man, and early entrepreneur, born in Vermont in 1815, later to relocate to Troy, New York with his family in 1831. As a young man, Elisha went into the pharmaceutical business, until he was 21 when he was advised by his employer to open his own shop - Which he would eventually do. In his first venture he went into business with Jared S. Weed, only to perish. He opened another druggist shop with John Van Schaick, which he took full control of when John retired. This was only the start of Elisha's illustrious career. E. Waters went on to manufacture ink bottles, paper boxes, and interestingly enough, paper boats, and even paper architectural components. Records show Mr. Waters was active during the Civil War manufacturing 4,000,000 cartridge boxes and 65,000 saddle trees for the Union Forces. He was also engaged by the War Department to inspect saddle tree manufacturing plants elsewhere. Waters was a strict Northern supporter having been a strong Abolitionist prior to the war. P. V. Hagner can be found in multiple war time documents, listed as the receiver in a letter "Under existing circumstances, and in view of the large amount of public property at Fort Leavenworth, I consider it very important that the garrison should at once be re-enforced, and request authority to order to that post two companies of artillery from Fort Randall an two companies of infantry from Fort Kearney. Please answer by telegraph." - "Byt. Major P. V. HAGNER, U. S. Army". This saddle tree shows very good condition for age, crafted of wood, with rawhide wrap, and is additionally stitched with thick rawhide. The saddle tree shows an "E. WATERS - MAKER - TROY. N.Y." brass plaque, and is stamped "P.V. Hagner - Lt. Col..." on the left side. The saddle tree has only minor splitting, and displays fantastically. The tree measures 16 1/4" long, 10 7/8" wide, and 8 3/8" tall.
