London Colt Model 1851 Percussion Revolver

Scarce post-Civil War, 1866 production, Fourth Model 1851 Navy revolver marked "-ADDRESS COL. COLT LONDON-" on the top barrel flat. The revolver has a blue iron trigger guard and back strap. The barrel lug is marked with a "crown/V" and "crown/GP" proofmark, and the same proofs are marked on the cylinder alternating between each nipple recess. The left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT" and the left side trigger guard shoulder is marked "36 CAL". The revolver is in the same serial number range as the London marked revolver (serial number 197622) shown on page 136 of "The Book of Colt Firearms" by Sutherland and Wilson. The cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas naval battle scene and marked "COLTS PATENT No 5790". The complete matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap, the partial number "95790" is on the wedge, "5790" on the cylinder pin and the loading lever is un-numbered. There is an "L" under the serial number on the frame and trigger guard. The butt is double stamped "DEA". The revolver has the Colt high polish commercial blue finish on the barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The loading lever, frame and hammer are casehardened. The revolver has the late pattern frame with a capping groove and is fitted with a smooth varnished one-piece walnut grip. Wilson states that the high serial number on the London marked Model 1851 Navy revolver pictured in his book indicates the revolver was manufactured in the United States for sale in Great Britain.

The frame retains The frame, hammer and loading lever retain most of the original case colors with areas of smooth silver-gray. The grip is fine with much of original varnish remaining, showing a number of minor pressure dents, some minor lower edge wear and some minor dings. The markings are clear. The action is slightly out of time, otherwise functions well.
