Life & Explorations of Dr. Livingstone 1875
For your consideration is this well preserved copy of author John S. Roberts's "The Life And Explorations of Dr. Livingstone, LL.D.", published by B.B. Russell, 55 Cornhill, Boston 1875. The book is decoratively bound in green cloth with gilt decoration and title; contains a tissue-guarded portrait of Dr. Livingstone, illustrated plates and a map of Southern Africa. David Livingstone (1813 - 1873) was a British physician, Congregationalist, and pioneer Christian missionary with the London Missionary Society, an explorer in Africa, and one of the most popular British heroes of the late 19th-century Victorian era. He had a mythical status that operated on a number of interconnected levels: Protestant missionary martyr, working-class "rags-to-riches" inspirational story, scientific investigator and explorer, imperial reformer, anti-slavery crusader, and advocate of commercial and colonial expansion. Book is in good condition, and has a penciled signature "From Reese Library" "G35" and a sticker "ex libris - William Blake" on the inside cover, and "4 RB '75" "B" penciled on the inside back cover. The book measures 5.25" x 7.5" x 1.5".
