Letter to J. G. Bennett, Esq, Richmond VA, 1846, concerning a duel between H. Pleasant, and Mr. Richey and states ‘Thomas Richey Jr of the Richmond Enquirer took place yesterday morning about 5 O’clock, The bridge on the Manchester side of the river. Mr. Pleasant challenged Richey who recently published him as a coward in the enquirer, they fought at ten paces with pistols, to advance as they thought proper after the first fire and Richey had a short sword by his side, also Pleasant a sword cane. Pleasant fired once and there was an advance with sword and Richey fired five times at him while advancing. Four shots which took effect. Richey only rec’d a slight wound near the eye which it is supposed was caused by the sword cane of his opponent, where Pleasant sank in the arms of the second and was bore off the ground. He died this morning at two o’clock and an inquest has been held over the body. I write you thinking any news will be acceptable to Harold and city papers are almost silent on this matter. I have the above from an eye witness. You may depend upon its correctness. Signed, a subscriber. Summarized. The document is on watermark stationary, good condition, fully
