Letter dated Oct 27, 1827, signed by Commodore Chauncey, U.S. Navy, to N.X. Cox, Esq, judge advocate, Philadelphia, regarding the summons Col. Gamble and Lt. A. Edson and Lt. Norfolk, Voorhees in what appears to be a courts martial, probably for dueling. 12” by 8”, slight folding and fraying, and good writing. It is an interesting fact that more naval officers were killed in duels from 1790 through 1860 than were killed in battle at sea. It became a huge problem, and eventually a courts martial-able offense. Chauncey commanded a ship at the Burlington Bay during the war of 1812 and was victorious against the British in a major action and a ship. Three USS Chauncey destroyers were named after him. From the William R. Orbelo Collection. Est: $750 - $1,500
