Late 1800s Butte, Montana Mining Pickaxes (7)
Featured in this lot is this collection of seven mining pickaxes accredited to the Butte Mining Company in Butte, Montana. Two of the pickaxes are just the heads as the wood shafts have been broken off. These pickaxes have blacksmith forged heads and wood shafts. This style pickaxe was originally used by miners while mining for copper and silver. These axes feature a shorter handle and a long head, which are ideal for use in close quarters. This type of pickaxe may also be called a "Mandrill", whose name means exactly what the "Pick" was used for. The heads of the pickaxes show some slight rusting while some of the shafts show erosion to the wood. The largest pick measures 26" L x 12" W, while the smallest pick measures 11 3/4" L x 7 1/8" W. The heads with no shafts measure 5" L x 13 1/4" W and 2 1/8" L x 7 1/4" W.
