Larry & Maj Rare USAF Marriage Documents
From Larry Hagman's Estate comes a collection of personal documents that reads like a John le Carré spy novel. In 1954, Hagman, while still stationed in the UK in the United States Air Force as an Airman First Class, met and wanted to marry Swedish-born Maj Axelsson. However this was right smack in the middle of the "cold war", and American's, especially Service Men wanting to marry "foreigners" was not an easy task. These original documents from Hagman's own files chronicle the amazing red tape that both Larry and Maj had to go through in order for him to marry her. They include original background investigations into Maj from the Foreign Service of the United States, background checks into Hagman's own "criminal records" back in the States, with reports by the Chief of Police of Norwalk Connecticut, extensive medical examinations by the United States Air Force Hospital with original certificates certifying that Hagman was in good physical condition and free of "all communicable diseases", International Certificates of Vaccinations for Maj, International Driving permits, Maj's original birth certificates, passports and Department of Justice Waivers and Visas (all of which had to be inspected and approved), various versions of her original passport and military photos for both Hagman and Maj, many of which were rejected, and had to be reshot to USAF and US Justice specifications, Under Secretary of State documents allowing Maj to work in the UK while Hagman was stationed there, original (with all the old style official stamps, signatures, imprinting, etc) Department of Justice permits to enter the United States, reams of fascinating Swedish documents (yes, they loved red tape just as much), "Letters of Acquiescence" forms that Maj had to fill out to "desire to marry an American", Third US Air Force's own investigations into Maj's background, and finally, right out of the ending of a romantic movie, the final original letters of approval from the Commander and Colonel of the USAF granting Maj "the right" to marry Hagman. It was well worth it, since Maj was married to Hagman from 1954 until his death in 2012, and gave him two wonderful children.
