Large framed and triple matted hand-colored re-strike engraving from antique copper plates entitled “Return From Hawking” by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802-1873), approx. 33-1/2” x 42-1/4” overall and showing a beautifully detailed scene of an Englishman, his Falconer, horses, birds and dogs returning home to the manor, wife and children. Landseer was known in both Britain and America as the greatest English animal painter of the 19th century. He was awarded a prize by the Society of Arts at the age of 11, had paintings hanging in the Royal Academy Exhibition in London when he was 13 and Queen Victoria knighted him at the age of 48. It was said that Sir Landseer’s work excelled all others because he gave his animal scenes a moral dimension and often provided their expressions with an almost human quality (this piece being a typical example). A truly outstanding work, beautifully framed and matted and suitable for display in a place of prominence in any home or office. Est.: $600-$1,200.
