Large forged iron treasure chest with key-release mechanism and two large forged iron hasps for padlocks. Double key holes top and front. The top key-hole shows a fancy cover to hide the lock release. The frontlock, which is visible is a dummy. Any burglar or thief might spend a long time working on the lock which would never open the box. The interior of the box shows a money-type box with key release lockingmechanism for further security. The box measures 15-1/4”h by 23-1/4”l by 15-3/8” (16-5/8” with lid), and dates approx. 1550 – 1750 in our opinion, and weighs approx. 45lbs. The quality of the mechanism isexcellent and the lockplate covers engraved. Includes two operating keys and original handles and clasps, etc. This box was bound to have contained great treasures and possibly was used in the Spanish Colonial era to carry riches back to Spain.
