Offered for public purchase is this Late-19th Century Lakota Sioux Native American Indian trade axe tomahawk collected at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The piece from the previous collection of Ben Thompson and Tom Hardy, both resected collectors. The war club tomahawk shows a hand-forged trade axe head that features a weeping heart cutout (cut out) in the center of the blade and a slight rear-facing spur. The wooden haft handle is adorned with brass trade tacks and has a porcupine quilled dangle drop tied on with an old thimble, trade hawk bells and dyed red plume feathers. There are two sections of high-relief carving on the haft with brass trade tacks. The head is secured to the haft with wedges of old wood and pieces of wetted and hardened parfleche rawhide hide. The entire tomahawk shows a nice, deep chocolate patina with mellow blade. Provenance: Form the previous collection of Ben Thompson, a noted collector and tomahawk author, and Tom Hardy, also a noted collector. The head measures overall 7 inches long by 3 ½ inches wide and 16 ½ inches in total length.
