A young Lakota performs a tribal dance at a powwow - a gathering of people, often from several neighboring friendly tribes, to celebrate Native American traditions. Although many Indians of different regions of the United States participate in powwows today, such gatherings are traditionally the province of the Plains Indians, such as the Lakota. The dances historically performed at powwows included the Shawl Dance, Fancy Dance, Traditional Dance and Grass Dance. Through intermarriage or as a way to provide fellowship, these powwow dances spread beyond Plains tribes and are now performed by many Native Americans, such as those in California. From the National Geographic Image Collection Daniel R. Westergren, Circa 1991 Framed, size is 10" x 15".
