Labradorite Hand Carved Indian Chief Portrait
Offered in this lot is this amazing carving of an Indian Chief's portrait on a Labradorite stone. This stone has been hand carved, displaying a stunning mix of vibrant colors. This beautifully tactile carving is of a very high grade. Excellent Labradorescence is shown, also known as the Schiller effect—the stone’s famous property. When exposed to bright light, the gem becomes a shimmering tapestry of color. The natives of Pauls Island off the coast of Labrador have told the story of Labradorite for generations. The tale recounts a legendary Inuit warrior, the first to discover that the Aurora Borealis had been stolen from the sky and imprisoned in the gem known as Labradorite. Smashing the stone with his spear, he returned the northern lights to their home, but some light remained eternally encased in the crystal. As legend has it, this is how the phenomenon of Labradoresence came to be. This oval stone is polished on the back. The stone measures 2 3/4" x 2" x 1/2" and weighs 64.4 grams.
