LONDON REFURBISHED JAMES PURDEY BAR IN WOOD
HAMMER GUN. Cal. 12 Ga. 2-3/4". S# 10330 (1879). The 28" sleeved barrels are marked "J. Purdey & Sons 314 1/2 Oxford St. London" on narrow game rib. Barrel flats are stamped with Birmingham nitro proofs and 1973 London nitro re-proofs for 2-1/2" chambers and "SLEEVED". Case hardened top lever bar in wood Purdey action is fitted with front spring locks with round bodied serpentine rebounding hammers. Action and locks are engraved with near full coverage classic Purdey style miniscule shaded scroll with rose bouquet highlights as most likely done by head engraver James Lucas. "J. Purdey & Sons" is on each lockplate and top lever is engraved "Patent". S# is on trigger guard tang. Straight grip buttstock is made from a truly exceptional piece of burl figured European walnut and measures 14-5/8" over black "Decelerator" pad. Stock also features drop points, point pattern grip checkering and a vacant silver oval. Matching splinter forend has Anson release. Iron is stamped with unknown actioner's mark, a six pointed star. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .729. R .729. Restriction: L .014 (Mod). R .011 (Lt. Mod). Wall thickness: L .030. R .036. STOCK: DAH: 2-1/16". DAC: 1-7/16". CAST: neutral. LOP: 14-5/8". WEIGHT: 6 lb. 12 oz. CONDITION: good as refurbished. Sleeved barrels retain nearly all of a good quality re-black. Action and locks retain nearly all of a re-color that is a good approximation of original type. Buttstock heavily refinished with softening to sharp edges, checkering haphazardly re-cut, pad is relatively new. Renewed forend wood matches fairly well, checkering good with little wear. Bores are bright and shiny. Action is tight. Wood shows epoxy repairs at bottom front of right lock and behind hinge area which is not unusual for bar in wood guns. Locks are good. Right hammer most likely a replacement. (01-23910/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
