Koto era katana or long sword of Japanese handmade manufacture in traditional mountings with signed blade Shigeyuki of Bungo province about 1624 or earlier. The very straight blade measures 25 ½” across thecutting-edge and is in good condition for its age showing some slight erosion and beginning pitting with small areas of exposed core or Kizu. There is a nice grain to the steel and the temper line is visible to thetip. The blade has been cleaned lightly (not Japanese). The tang shows a dark rust and the black mountings have been repainted. Brass Tsuba and fittings are probably of the World War II era except a very old hibaki and onemount is older. Est.: $1,000-$3,000.
