This is an excellent original Koken Companies St. Louis Barber Chair from circa 1930. Today, the Koken barber chairs are the most sought after and valuable examples for their excellent craftsmanship, sturdy construction, and exquisite finishes. This example shows a white enameled steel construction with fancy nickel plated iron accents. The piece shows the rare round bottom seat and is in all original authentic condition. The foot plate and rest both show the original filigree style engraving and cutout accents and are marked, “Koken Companies St. Louis USA Patented.” This model of chair by Koken was the first to successfully integrate the hydraulic lift. This technology made it convenient for the barber to lift the chair up or bring it down when needed (a groundbreaking idea during the early 1900’s). Provenance: The piece was displayed at the Tonsorial Parlor Barber Shop in Downtown Bozeman, Montana since 1972 and has been in the private collection for many years before the shops opening. The chair has the original high chair piece for when small children came in for a haircut. The leather shows good condition with wear. The piece is fully functional and in good overall condition, it does show use. It measures 47 1/2" H x 42" L. Excellent very rare early piece. Some examples of the same model have sold at auction for $7,000 to $10,000 in varying conditions.
