This is a fine old example of the Knights of Pythias highly decorative sword with a nickel plated scabbard. A chain Bond of Steel runs from the Knights Head pommel to double Phoenix crossguard. The crossgaurd also reads "F C B" for Friendship, Charity and Benevolence. The Pythians were the first Fraternal Organization chartered by the United States Congress and at the urging of President Lincoln in 1864. Its' goal was to bring the both sides of a warring Nation back to Peace and Brotherhood. This sword is a fine example of that reverent period and the lofty goal. The blade has multiple markings, starting with the original owner of the sword "G.K. Thomas", it also reads "Pettibone MFG. CO Cincinnati. The leather covered wood grip does have breakage at the hilt, as well as patina on the blade. The sword when inserted into the scabbard measures 35 1/4" long, and 5" at its widest.
