Estimate: $5500 - 9500
This is an Officer's Victorian era Dragoon Guards 1871 pattern helmet. The front and rear peaks are edged with gilt metal and are lined with black skived leather. There is a gilt laurel leaf band across the top of the front peak and another running from the top of the skull to the bottom of the rear peak. The helmet plate is a diamond cut 12 pointed silvered star. On top of the star is a gilt metal elliptical shaped garter with the motto "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE" backed with translucent blue enamel and a "VR" cypher inside the garter with a red translucent enamel background. Beneath the star is a heavy silver banner with the title "KINGS DRAGOON GUARDS". A red horsehair plume hangs from the gilt fluted plume holder with a four pronged base. There is a small gilt tudor rose at the top of the plume. Tudor rose ear bosses suspend a gilded chin chain backed by red leather.
