Kentucky Marked Triplett & Scott Civil War Era Repeating Carbine with Scarce 22 Inch Barrel
This is a solid example of a Kentucky marked Triplett & Scott carbine that was manufactured in 1865 by the Meriden Manufacturing Company as part of a contract of 5,000 carbines to arm the Kentucky Home Guard mustered into service to protect supply lines under General W.T. Sherman, however the carbines were received too late to be used in the Civil War. Some 2,000, 22-inch barrel carbines were manufactured and the remaining 3,000 had 30 inch barrels. The carbine has a casehardened frame, trigger guard, buttplate and barrel band with the remaining parts blue. The forearm and stock are varnished walnut. The carbine features a seven-round magazine and is loaded by twisting the barrel to align with the magazine on the lower left side of the receiver. The carbine has a folding leaf rear sight which lacks elevation markings and a pinched blade front sight. Sling swivels on both the toe and heel of the stock and the number "105" stamped into the toe. The serial number is stamped on the right side of the frame, the lower left side of the frame is marked "MERIDEN MAN'FG. CO. / MERIDEN, CONN." and the left side of the breech is marked "KENTUCKY" and the patent marking: "TRIPLETT & SCOTT / PATENT DEC. 6, 1864" is marked on the upper receiver tang.
