Kenai Mountains Alaskan Barren Ground Caribou Governor's Tag
Here is an outstanding opportunity to hunt the Kenai Mountains of Alaska for barren ground caribou. Funds generated from the purchase will be used for on-the-ground wildlife conservation efforts by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Method of take is rifle. The hunt area can be accessed by foot from the Sterling Highway, Seward Highway, or Palmer Creek Road in Hope. The season is open from the August 13th to December 31, 2013. Early in the season caribou are dispersed in small groups throughout the hunt area. With the onset of the rut in mid to late September, the caribou generally congregate near the headwaters of Big Indian Creek and around American Pass. These areas are a 10+ mile hike from a road, so hiring a horse packer may is advised. Snowfall starts as early as late September, but usually holds off until late October. This auction is for a hunting tag only; no accommodations, meals, outfitting arrangements, licenses, etc. are included and all further costs are the responsibility of the buyer. Contact the Chugach National Forest Staff for hunter access details at (907) 743-9500. More specific information regarding the hunt can be obtained from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Jeff Selinger in the Soldotna office. He may be reached at (907) 262-9368 or jeff.selinger@alaska.gov.
