Item/Description: Japanese Satsuma pottery moon flask. Late Meiji period, circa 1880-1912. Crafted from fine earthenware with a creamy crackle-glazed ground. Decorated in the moriage style, featuring raised, slip-trailed enamels and dense gilding. Central figural cartouche depicts the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, Kannon, alongside a haloed disciple, and acolytes, set against a sunburst, and framed by intricate floral brocade borders. Flanked by sculpted mythical beast handles symbolizing protecting. Inner rim bears hand-painted "Dai Nippon" (Great Japan) mark. Produced during the "golden age" of Japanese exports, hand-painting this signature in kanji was a mark of high quality, used by prestigious studios to distinguish their fine art from cheaper mass-produced goods. While the 1891 McKinley Tariff Act forced most manufacturers to use simpler English stamps, elite workshops often retained this traditional hand-applied mark to appeal to high-end international collectors and exhibition judges.
