Iron-headed trade-type tomahawk with oak shaft, metal studs, and burnt file decoration, early to mid 19th century. The head measures approx. 8” from the tip of the blade to the tip of the bowl. The blademeasures approx. 3-1/4” across widest part of the blade. The head shows forging and is authentic to the period and shows a pronounced lip to the bowl. The head shows forging to add the bowl to the trade-typeblade portion. The metal surfaces show light to moderate erosion and pinprick pitting. Some slightly heavier blood pitting at the front. The blade shows sharpening and use. The shaft appears to have been made fromhardwood, probably oak, possibly from a table leg, and shows Indian carved edition pipe stem and irregular Indian type drill hole for ornaments. The upper portion of the tomahawk shows burnt-file decoration and the piece is mounted with rusty iron tacks. The shaft appears to be original to the head and shows correct patina around the metal portion where it meets the wood. From the William R. Orbelo Collection. Est.; $7,000-$14,000
