Interesting possible Confederate conversion of Merrill breech loading carbine to single shot muzzleloader with forged iron bands and crude hand-made wood loading rod, serial number 2618 (first model with brass patchbox). The breech latch has been removed and the breech welded shut. A rear sight and larger front sight were handmade and added. The metal condition is fair to good with some pitting around the breech and hammer fromfiring with the nipple showing a great deal of battle action. The stock shows some cleaning and reshaping years ago during the period of use. The lock works well and the saddle ring is retained. There has been aswivel added to the trigger guard to use with a strap tied over the barrel. The carbine has been bored out to approximately .58 caliber smoothbore. It would make sense to convert a breech loader to a muzzleloader ifyou did not have paper cartridges and wanted to use the more commonly issued .58 caliber musket balls. William A. Gary collection consigned by his estate. Est.: $600-$1200
