Interesting mid-19th century spear point Bowie knife with small checkered hardwood gripscale, probably American by surgical implement maker, circa 1850s-60s by style. The knife measures 17" overall with 12"blade, the blade measures 1-1/4" across widest point with a thick bolster and precision grind. The tip is bent slightly, the inside of the guard and backside are nicely scroll engraved. There is a loop atthe pommel of the knife for attaching cord. The coarse checkered hardwood grips with finger groove are reminiscent of surgical saws used during the Civil War. The blade is good with some minor erosion and pitting.Interesting.
