Interesting bowie knife with hand-forged blade. Blade measures 13-1/2”, knife is 18-3/8” overall. Blade shows a pronounced clip point which extends 4-5/8” back from the point. The blade shows forging, a handmade brass guard, and a pinned hardwood grip which may be hickory or oak with pronounced grain. The hilt shows a dark patina, the grip is good to very good with some staining. The blade is somewhat thin and shows edging and forging marks and is slightly irregular like it was made by a blacksmith. We would date this knife approx. 1820 to 1860. A hand-made simple and cheap leather scabbard from the 1950’s is penned on black letters on the back, “To my good friend, Harry ___ Texas, ___ Scout Bowie, ____ at the Alamo, Richard Widmark”. This knife was gifted to Col. Orbelo and many original knives and studio knives were made for the movies like the Iron Mistress" and the "Alamo". This knife we believe is authentic to the 19th century other than the"scabbard which is a studio addition. From the William R. Orbelo collection. Est: $1,000 - $3,000
