Interesting Smith & Wesson Military and Police DA revolver, .38 Special cal., 4” barrel, blue finish, 5-screw with lanyard ring, checkered wood grips and backstrap stamped “U.S.N.C.P.C.”, #757416; accompaniedby a copy of a May 21, 1970 letter from Roy Jinks, S&W Historian indicating this gun was shipped to the Hartford Ordinance Depot and that in the same serial number range, guns were shipped to USN Calif., USNVA, USNSArmory. He further states “I wonder if possibly a mistake was made in shipping the guns from the factory in the hurry of wartime production, and that your gun was actually shipped to USN Calif. Then a possibleidentification of the markings on your gun could be United States Navy, California Costal Patrol”. The gun is in overall very good condition showing considerable blue finish, with scattered old dings and marsthat would be typical of military-type use with high point and muzzle wear; very good bore, crisp action, sharp markings and very good grips.
