Interesting American flintlock pistol of Dragoon size with Ketland lock and British proofed barrel probably predating American arsenal with military styling. The pistol measures 18 ½” overall with 12” barrel of approximately .54 caliber smooth bore. There is a large stamp on the barrel just above the front edge of the lock which is either a W or M depending on which direction it is read. The metal surfaces show a dark brown patina finish with some scattered light to moderate pitting and erosion. The flintlock parts are all original to the period. The pistol is simply mounted in plain brass mounts of the late 18th-century style. The stock is very American in appearance and hand-made stocked in plain Walnut. The stock is good with some losses, gouges and normal aging but completely untouched and un-cleaned with a nice out of the attic appearance. A period iron tipped ramrod is included. American militia forces depended on small rural Gunsmiths before the creation of a national Armory in 1799. Est.: $1,250 -$2,500.
